We love the As We Are Awards so much that we’ve decided to become a major partner. Now in its 19th year, the annual As We Are Art Award is the state’s premier exhibition showcasing Western Australian artists with intellectual disability.

The awards attract over 150 artists from across WA, from those who are beginning their creative journey to established artists.  Artists from Rise’s Arts Hub in Warwick as well as those working from their studios in Rise’s supported accommodation houses across Perth have won many of the highly coveted art awards and sold many of their works.

“At Rise we believe in the importance of providing opportunities for people of all abilities to both create and celebrate their creations with the world! We recognise that art provides many therapeutic benefits including an opportunity for people to express themselves, make friends and have fun. We are therefore pleased to support the “As We Are Awards” as it is a fantastic opportunity to recognise and acknowledge the many talented artists across our state.” Shaun Mays Acting CEO and Director - Strategy and Growth.

Former Disability Minister, Stephen Dawson, was lucky enough to purchase Helen Larke’s painting ‘Patchy the Red Panda’ at last year’s awards. Helen attends the Arts Hub every Thursday.

Artists and staff from the Arts Hub have also volunteered their time to support the awards. Lynne Newport photographed last year’s opening night and Robbie Tremain (pictured) assisted with videography.

Entries for the 2021 As We Are Art Awards are now open! Western Australian artists with intellectual disability are invited to submit one artwork in any art form. Entry forms are due 5pm Friday 8th October and can be submitted by email, post, or for the first time, online here.

This year there are eight Awards on offer each with a corresponding cash prize of $1,000 - this includes specific awards for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander entrants, Regional entrants and three-dimensional entries. The judges will also award ten certificates of high commendation for outstanding works.
