The Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) provides support for those everyday tasks like preparing meals, personal self-care, help around the house with things like cleaning and laundry, gardening, and transport to appointments, shopping and those regular activities and groups that keep you connected with your friends and community. Further information is available here.

Home Care Packages provide a wider range of supports and can cover more complex needs. They come in four levels depending on what you need:
  • Home Care Level 1 – basic care needs
  • Home Care Level 2 – low level care needs
  • Home Care Level 3 – intermediate care needs
  • Home Care Level 4 – high care needs

Being eligible for a Home Care Package means that the government will subsidise the cost of your care. This makes the help you need much more affordable.

People with high incomes may pay an income tested fee which is an extra contribution determined through an income assessment.  The fee is determined on your specific income (including your pension) and is different for everyone.  However, full pensioners do not pay an income-tested care fee.

You can find out how much the government contributes to each level of package and more information about the income tested fee, including a home care fee estimator here.

You can check to see if you meet the requirements for each of these types of packages and apply for an assessment on the My Aged Care website here.
